It was twenty years ago today. Sgt Pepper told the band to play. (No, not the Beatles. That was 22 years previously.) We are referring to THE TIME LODGERS, one of the best bands from Norway starting with a T. They started their illustrious career in 1989.

Who are THE TIME LODGERS - and why?

Long story short: The band set out to save pop music from itself, prefering tuneful melodies to - well - crap, and vinyl to CDs. In this they failed. They did, however, produce some glorious music along the way.

They began playing in the printshop in Oslo where drummer John Wahl worked, initially doing cover versions for fun while drinking copious amounts of alcohol on Saturday afternoons. Guitarist Tom Trøbråten worked as a bartender, stroke, DJ at Oslo's premier rock bar LAST TRAIN. Being a bit of a music guru, the music Tom played grabbed the music-starved attention of (future) vocalist, stroke, songwriter Odd T. Benkestok. The two future pop-geniuses agreed that the 1980s had been largely bloody awful, and that pop music needed rescuing. Inspired by the do-it-yourself spirit of punk and the melodic sensibilities of bands like TELEVISION PERSONALITIES and THE PASTELS, they decided to accept the challenge.

The band gradually gravitated toward original material and realised it was time to make a live debut. And that's twenty years ago today.

Was the concert a success? Did they pull lots of groupie-girls? Do they remember anything at all? Find out as the story of the fabulous TIME LODGERS continues shortly. Watch this space...

Well, that introduction was written in 2009, followed by fuck all.

However, now it is 2012 (blimey!), and after a couple of false re-starts, the band seems to be picking up steam (and gigs).
